As I quietly entered Jennifer Caggiano’s kindergarten classroom today, I saw students intently watching Walter, the alligator, getting his teeth brushed!  Chris Ruymen, a dental hygienist, was invited to spend the day at TECCS teaching children about proper brushing techniques, hygienist procedures, and eating healthy snacks. This wonderful visit was organized by First Grade teacher, Jen Haitz.

Recently, all the students have enjoyed two musical performances: the play Aladdin hosted by the Hudson County Technical School and Bollywood Funk, a dance troupe that had everyone dancing in the gym. Thank you to our kindergarten teacher, Laura Alfano, for organizing the Bollywood Funk assembly.

On Monday the 29th, author Hudson Talbott will speak about his book, River of Dreams. All students will receive a copy of the book for Mr. Talbott to sign. This author visit and the purchase of the books have been possible through the generous donation of TECCS parents. Information on this event will be in the backpacks.

Prospective parents are always asking about the curriculum. We use as a foundation the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.  This is a viable document that keeps us grounded on the state’s expectations for each grade. From there, we expand our mission by incorporating differentiating instruction, individualized learning goal plans, infusing the arts in our core subjects, and thematic units.  The state standards have currently been revised for schools to meet the global demands of the 21st century.  As we learn of these changes, you will see the results in the classroom instruction.

Grade level newsletters mailed monthly will appraise you on what is coming up in your child’s classroom. Currently, kindergarten students are counting coins and learning about community helpers. Representing one type of community helper, the first Filipino woman police officer in Jersey City came to speak to them.

First grades are adding double-digit numbers. Following their theme, Our Community and the World, students are studying countries, weather, and customs. As you walk the hallway by the first grade classes, please take a moment to read the published writing pieces hanging by each child’s name.

In September, our curriculum will be enhanced with the addition of a Library/Media Center.  This project is funded by the generous grant received from the W.E. Simon Foundation.
